Jerrem here. just a quick update. Im currently in Toronto.
Toronto has a vibrant graffiti culture just as any other big city… however as usually tends to happen local government shuns graffiti art and street art in General. Projector Bombing serves to promote the idea of street art, so with this in mind I have been projector bombing the city, as well as flying the GRL Perth symbol high (its the projectors test image). With this we declare Toronto not just a graffiti zone but a dedicated digital graffiti zone as well.
A two parter, Friday and Saturday saw over 100,000 people through the gates of the Sydney Big Day Out’s. You’ll notice these postings get thinner as the tour progresses.
Gold Coast was warm. We learned from the Auckland show and got out there mid-afternoon to be primed for the evening. The golf buggy was tricked out and we found a nice dark spot projecting onto the TripleJ tent. Less dicks were drawn. Lots of “drunken” punters having lots of fun. People seemed generally amused with being able to draw in light on the back of a golf buggy for all to see.
Auckland was the first stop on our hitch-hike with the Big Day Out. The weather was awesome and the crowds were drunken and subdued. We attempted to make some lightness in the Boiler Room but the sunny day just owned our projector. We commandeered the “Audience is the Art” Exhibition tent for an hour or so, but things didn’t really heat up til after dark (well duh). The locals had alot of fun, heaps of bug ducks were drawn though, almost a disturbing amount…
We used Jerrem’s neato little tablet pc, with tagtool + arduino controller and tripod, a nice versatile portable setup for moving through the crowds to find a good vantage.
Thanks Auckland! (I had never been to NZ before, definitely going back)
GRL co-founder Evan Roth has just released DustTag, a graffiti analysis tool for your iPhone / iPod Touch. It’s an awesome little app for scribing out your tags on the go, and makes for easy uploading into the GML (Graffiti Markup Language) open database at 000000book.com.
We’ve included GML output into our drawing tools for the Big Day Out tour, and will be selectively submitting tags to the black book database after each show.
Only 2 days to go before we head off on tour with the Big Day Out. We’ve built some rad drawing tools for you all to play with, and are primed for public interaction (however drunken you will be by nightfall at each show). Drop by and say hi if you going along. We’ll be the idiots careering round in a tech-pimped out golf buggy. First stop Auckland! Will post pics as we get em.
We’re going to attempt to be all that with twitter and live video streaming etc so follow us and keep your eyes peeled for some action. See you in a few weeks Perth.
If you weren’t one of the lucky ones to secure BDO tix or it’s just really not your scene we’ll be hitting the streets of each city the night before each show for some guerilla projections. Hit up our Facebook page for the event details, you’ll have to stay tuned for exact locations.
Jerrem organised Projector Bombing on the facade of Perth Oval.
