Projector Bombing Circular Quay

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

So the plan was to get the golf buggy trucked to Circular Quay and begin the night projecting onto the Museum of Contemporary Art then move around and try getting some light on to the Opera House. We didn’t hold the highest hope for the Opera House because.. well.. you know.. it’s a massive Sydney icon and someone’s sure to be annoyed about it.

MCA security were being jerks and basically aggressively said from the get-go that projecting onto their building was definitely not allowed. They weren’t really that impressed when we turned the projector 12degrees to the right and drew all over a tree out the front. The local rangers came down after hearing something on their police scanners and asked a few questions but didn’t really mind. We got a few of them to do some drawings and they loved it… People started to gather and we ended up moving a little closer to the wharf to hit a cruise ship moored in the quay. By this time lots of kids and old people were getting into it.

Jerrem drove the buggy around the quay towards the Opera House where security immediately pulled us up. We parked millimetres outside their jurisdiction and hit a big rock wall but after 20 minutes or so we were shut down. We drove back to the truck for pickup and headed home.

It was really fun to see kids using the tools, they are definitely having the most enjoyment out there. It was definitely a different crowd to the BDO youth. Good times.

BDO Gold Coast

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Gold Coast was warm. We learned from the Auckland show and got out there mid-afternoon to be primed for the evening. The golf buggy was tricked out and we found a nice dark spot projecting onto the TripleJ tent. Less dicks were drawn. Lots of “drunken” punters having lots of fun. People seemed generally amused with being able to draw in light on the back of a golf buggy for all to see.

BDO Auckland

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Auckland was the first stop on our hitch-hike with the Big Day Out. The weather was awesome and the crowds were drunken and subdued. We attempted to make some lightness in the Boiler Room but the sunny day just owned our projector. We commandeered the “Audience is the Art” Exhibition tent for an hour or so, but things didn’t really heat up til after dark (well duh). The locals had alot of fun, heaps of bug ducks were drawn though, almost a disturbing amount…

We used Jerrem’s neato little tablet pc, with tagtool + arduino controller and tripod, a nice versatile portable setup for moving through the crowds to find a good vantage.

Thanks Auckland! (I had never been to NZ before, definitely going back)

We on a National Tour

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Only 2 days to go before we head off on tour with the Big Day Out. We’ve built some rad drawing tools for you all to play with, and are primed for public interaction (however drunken you will be by nightfall at each show). Drop by and say hi if you going along. We’ll be the idiots careering round in a tech-pimped out golf buggy. First stop Auckland! Will post pics as we get em.

We’re going to attempt to be all that with twitter and live video streaming etc so follow us and keep your eyes peeled for some action. See you in a few weeks Perth.

If you weren’t one of the lucky ones to secure BDO tix or it’s just really not your scene we’ll be hitting the streets of each city the night before each show for some guerilla projections. Hit up our Facebook page for the event details, you’ll have to stay tuned for exact locations.
